One way to add some interesting effects to your website is to make parts of it such as background images follow you as you scroll up or down a page; sometimes called parallax scrolling. In this beginner tutorial I will walk through some steps to creating a simple parallax background image jQuery plugin.

Let’s start off by creating our web page. Nothing too impressive, just an HTML shell with some dummy text and references to the jQuery CDN.

PicJumbo was created by Viktor Hanacek in 2013 and offers a wide array of free high quality stock photography that can be used to spice up your web pages. These photos can be used for commercial or personal use as long as you follow the terms on their FAQ page.

FreeImages, which many may know as the former sxc.hu, is a huge database of user submitted vector graphics and stock photography. It offers many free, but also premium images to use on your website. It’s major flaw is that, since all images are created by different artists, they aren’t all free for commercial use. So, you will have to check each license individually.

Despite the name of this website (long story), I don’t consider myself, and am not implying that I’m, a graphic designer or artist. I’m a coder and probably always will be. I do still have to design my own templates in Photoshop, however, so I use a number of, preferably free, resources to keep my designs interesting and professional. In my first official blog post, I would like to share some of those resources. Some might be familiar, but I’m sure a few will be new to you, as they were for me once.

My go-to icon set for any project has to be FontAwesome, which can be downloaded and hosted on your server, or served by CDN via MaxCDN. A SASS and LESS version is also available for download.

One of my favorite features of this icon set is that it can be downloaded in a desktop compatible format so you can even use them in Photoshop, Illustrator or even MS Word (although this would only be useful for print, since if you open a .docx file on a computer without the FontAwesome font, they wou…
